Requesting a Speaker for Your Event

Need a speaker for your organization's next meeting? Looking for someone who can inform, entertain, motivate or persuade the members of your organization? The Toastmasters Speakers Bureau can help, for free. Whether it is a lecture, a keynote address, a seminar, a conference, a business meeting or a subject presentation, we can help you find the right speaker for your event.

Purpose: The Toastmasters Speakers Bureau program is a community public service of the Toastmasters organization of this area. The Bureau consists of registered members who are experienced, competent and professional speakers and trainers on a variety of subjects. The Bureau exists to help you present excellent programs to your organization and to allow our Toastmaster members to share with you their expertise and skills as speakers. Some of our members do speak professionally and may be available for other engagements on a fee basis. The bureau does not become involved in the scheduling of paid engagements, nor does it have jurisdiction over fees charged.

Costs: Per Toastmasters International, our speakers speak free of charge. They cannot profit monetarily. However, they may accept small gifts or compensation for reasonable travel expenses and material costs. That is arranged between you and the Toastmaster. Many Toastmasters are willing to travel outside their area, however, some do ask for reimbursement on their expenses incurred for your meeting presentation. Additionally, the speakers may accept donations on behalf of Toastmasters International.

Speakers: Each speaker already have pre-prepared presentations, including the approximate time ranges. However, many are also willing to prepare speeches which will serve your specific interests. Please contact speakers directly. The Speakers Bureau is not responsible for setting up speaking engagements.

FAQ:

  • Q: Will bureau members speak for free?
  • A: Because Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization, our bureau members cannot receive payment for services provided while representing Toastmasters International. Therefore, all speech topics listed here will be offered free of charge in the specific format they've been posted. For example, if a member states that s/he will give a 30-minute presentation about sales, do not expect them to give a full-day workshop on the topic, for free.

  • Q: Can I make a donation to Toastmasters?
  • A: Yes, donations are welcome as a result of a presentation by a member. Such donations should be addressed to "District 22 Toastmasters".

  • Q: Can I pay a bureau member for a more extensive engagement?
  • A: Several bureau members are paid professional speakers and offer fee-based presentations, workshops, and seminars as part of their business. To be a member of this bureau, each participant must agree to offer free services as a Toastmasters representative. If a member offers paid presentations, the member has a link in his/her biographical page leading to his/her personal or company web sites. You are welcome to visit those web sites and hire a speaker as you need. However, note that if you hire a speaker for a paid performance, they cannot be introduced or acknowledged as a representative of Toastmasters. Additionally, all coordination, liabilities and responsibilities are between you and the speaker.

  • Q: Do bureau members offer services other than speeches?
  • A: Many bureau members are available for a variety of presentations such as a masters of ceremonies, a keynote address, as speech contest judges, announcers, and facilitators or participants of other programs. A Toastmaster specialty is impromptu speaking.

  • Q: How do I book a speaker?
  • A: A few simple steps:
    • Review the list of speakers and their topics
    • Select one or more of the speakers you want to present at your organization
    • Complete the “Speaker Request” form including information about your event
    • You will be contacted by a Bureau representative
    • If a requested speaker is available, you will be put in contact with that person
    • Once a speaker is contacted, it is up to you and the speaker to make all arrangements
    • After the speaker has presented at your event, fill out the feedback form

  • Q: What do I do in the event of a problem?
  • A: You will need to work through any event problems directly with your selected speaker. If a replacement speaker is needed, your selected speaker and the Bureau representative will work with you to try to accommodate you, if possible.

  • Q: Will I be able to communicate directly with the speaker prior to my event?
  • A: Once you have been given the contact information for your speaker, you may communicate directly with him/her as needed.

  • Q: Can presentations be audio or video taped?
  • A: You will need to ask your selected speaker for consent to be recorded.

  • Q: How much notice do I need to give when requesting a speaker?
  • A: The amount of notice needed to secure a speaker varies, depending on speaker availability. Of course, the sooner, the better.

Being a Speakers Bureau Speaker

Have you ever dreamed of speaking to people and inspiring them to reach their goals? Are you ready to speak before large groups in professional and community settings? Do you have a great motivational speech, a humorous speech, a strong training presentation or an inspiring keynote address ready to present? Do you want to be a paid professional speaker and just need a little guidance to reach your goal? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the District Speakers Bureau is for you. Our Bureau is actively searching for speakers and trainers to represent our District within the commnity. We want to help you reach your goals! Like all things in Toastmasters, this is done as an unpaid volunteer basis. However, we can help prepare you for paid speaking engagements.

The Speakers Bureau serves as a liaison between community groups and organizations who are interested in having a speaker and Toastmasters who volunteer to speak outside their club. That is where you can participate.

As an active Speakers Bureau member, you will participate in meetings, workshops and seminars designed to prepare you to present to groups outside of the Toastmasters organization. You will also learn to develop great speech materials and a speaker’s biography. Speakers Bureau members may be featured in the District Speakers Bureau directory or on our District web site where visitors can select a speaker for their upcoming event.

Purpose:

  • Be a community service of the Toastmasters organization
  • Provide for Toastmasters members a venue for speaking opportunities beyond the club level
  • Have a Toastmaster be the representative of Toastmasters International
  • Serve as a public relations tool for Toastmasters International
  • Increase Toastmasters membership, both with individual members and with new clubs

Requirements of the Speaker:

  • The speech given shall be commercial free (i.e. you cannot speak as a member of any for-profit organization)
  • A speaker can accept small gifts, a meal or expense reimbursements from an organization, monetary compensation as a speaker is not allowed
  • Any donations to Toastmasters International must be forwarded to the District Treasurer
  • Speakers should be prepared to briefly describe the Toastmaster Organization

Each Speaker Must:

  • Be a Toastmaster in good standing
  • Obtained the Advanced Communicator Award (AC)
  • Have available at least two 15 minute prepared speeches on the topics determined by the Speakers Bureau
  • Agree to be contacted directly by organizations seeking speakers
  • Agree to NOT sell/present their own personal product or service. If the speaker belongs to a company whose business is related to the speech topic, that information can be shared in their introduction
  • Explain to your audience that you represent Toastmasters then give a brief description of Toastmasters. Toastmasters materials/brochures should be distributed to your audience, if appropriate
  • Provide biographical information for the Speakers Bureau Web site
  • Provide accurate contact information
  • Respond in a timely manner when contacted by organizations
  • Report back to the Speakers Bureau after each speaking engagement
  • Provide the organization with an evaluation form to be sent back to the Bureau or encourage them to submit the online feedback form

To Apply:

If you are member of District 22 Toastmasters and would like to speak for a group in our area, here is what you do:

  1. Fill out the online Speakers Bureau Application
  2. Submit the completed application to the Speakers Bureau Coordinator
  3. A Speakers Bureau committee member will contact you to discuss your submission and the Speakers Bureau membership requirements
  4. You may be asked to present your prepared presentations to a Speakers Bureau committee. They will evaluate your presentation to assure it fits with the standards of the District Speakers Bureau

Evaluation Process:

The Toastmasters Speakers Bureau must maintain a community standard of excellence of professional public speaking. Those submitting an application will be contacted and scheduled to do a presentation before a panel of evaluators. This evaluation is intended as a scale for the general public only as has nothing to do with your roles within Toastmasters functions. Having met the expected level of excellence, a brief summary of your speaking talents and presentations will be included for the general public to view. The general public may request your services by contacting the Speakers Bureau Coordinator. When you are requested as a Speakers Bureau presenter, the Bureau Coordinator will confirm your availability and follow-up with you to ensure the assignment matches and has been filled. The Bureau Coordinator will also follow-up with the requesting organization to assure feedback is submitted. This feedback helps improve the services provided by the Bureau.

Accredited Speaker Program

Toastmasters International’s Accredited Speaker Program recognizes those members who have attained a professional level of excellence in public speaking. The program is not for everyone. Only a handful of members have what it takes to become Accredited Speakers. Less than one-fourth of those who have applied for the program have qualified as Accredited Speakers. How can you tell if you have the skills necessary to become an Accredited Speaker?
  • Do you give public seminars, for which you usually receive a fee?
  • Are you invited by companies and organizations (excluding Toastmasters) to give presentations, for which you usually receive a fee?
  • Are these fees a significant source of income for you?
  • If you work for a company, do you often give presentations for your employer, either to other employees or to other groups or organizations? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may qualify for the program
