Toastmasters District 22 in Kansas & Western Missouri
November 2007 Edition
Target January to NET 5 for Your Club

By Annette Rude, DTM, Lieutenant Governor Marketing

Net5Have you made plans in your club to take advantage of January?  January is the month of New Year's Resolutions.  Maybe that's why it is also one of the top 3 months when new members join.

With prior planning now for special events in January, your club can grow membership out of the doldrums and all the way to that plus 5 DCP membership goal.

As District leaders, we want every club to end the year with five more members than they had last June.  Let's call it "NET 5".  It's easier and more fun at 20+ members.

We know it's hard to grow by five members.  But we believe it is so valuable to club success that we want to recognize every club that achieves it with a Gold Star pin for its club banner.  That's every club, regardless of size.  That means your club.

I want to award at least 50 Gold Star banner pins; why not 100!  We will begin awarding them at the banner parade in the spring conference.  (See The Charter Challenge on the home page www.toastmasters.org.)

I want to announce your club as a "Gold Star Club!" in the banner parade next April!

To help get everyone energized, we will stage a practice event at each TLI officer training in January, where we will recognize every club, regardless of size, that has at least ONE more member by January 1 than it had on June 30 - and present them with a helpful gift from TI's catalog of items.

Recruiting a new member for your club works best as a team effort covering public relations, first impressions and closing the sale.  Working as a team, your club members and officers can create synergies that are more than one person can achieve alone.

Make the three areas complement one another.  A good example is to hold a special event, like a demo meeting or open house or guest meeting - with food, special planning, decorations and promotions.  Pull out the stops.  And schedule it for January!

Enthusiasm is Contagious...
...Pass it on!

piperby Cyndra Melville, DTM, Lieutenant Governor Eduation and Training

We need enthusiastic session presenters for our Winter Training coming up in January.  If you have been an officer and really feel passionate about it, we need you to pass it on.  Contact Cyndra if you would like to accept this challenge.  Also, for Division A, you may contact Randy Neil or Gene Becker; for Division T, Faron Barr, or for Area S3, Jeanetta Chrystie.  Contact information is available at

http://www.toastmasters22.org/.

We want our Winter Training to be as helpful and fun as possible.  For that, we need enthusiastic, knowledgeable people.  How about you?

Catch the Latest Rising Star! Star

By Mike Tuttle, District 22 Governor

Regular readers of this newsletter will know that last month we started a new column called Rising Star in support of the District theme, S.T.A.R.S. Each month, members can nominate a toastmaster for the award by contacting their Area Governor and telling them of how Toastmasters has helped a member succeed in their everyday life - something as simple as listening better to others to something like happened to this month's winner.

Dave Cunningham of Jam N club hosted by LSI LOGIC in Wichita is a 12 year toastmaster and Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). Dave works for LSI but now has a new office and I suspect that it may have two walls containing windows. You see Dave got a little promotion. He has been named Wichita site manager - the highest ranking position in Wichita for LSI. CONGRATULATIONS Dave!!

We interviewed Dave and asked if he thought Toastmasters had helped him receive his promotion. In very un-toastmaster fashion (and to the chagrin of all the Grammarians in the audience) he responded, "Well YEAHHH!"

He particularly mentioned Table Topics and the 'thinking on your feet' skills it develops. Dave said he never realized how many times a day he would be expected to give a response to an unexpected question with no prep time in his new role.

Dave also explained that for him, the evaluation process has come in very handy. He said that he feels that again it fosters quick response time but more importantly gives him a tool he can use to evaluate a multitude of projects presented to him almost daily. Dave is glad he has learned how to evaluate to motivate and how to evaluate the proposal and presentation and NOT the person giving the project presentaion.

Finally, Dave said the number one tool that he employs in his everyday work life is the agenda: "Many of my employees accuse him of being quite the stickler about time." Dave pointed out that in a ten person meeting that runs 6 minutes overtime one man hour of productivity has been lost. If 4 meetings a week are held that's half a day.

Congratulations, Goal Getters!

By Cyndra Melville, DTM, Lieutenant Governor Education and Training

Star (Beige)

We have three clubs who have earned their Goal Getters awards so far:

Boeing Achievers from Area A-1

Semi-Pro from Area A-3

Cerner's Innovative Toastmasters from Area L-4.

Be sure to turn in your paperwork for educational awards and new members by the December 31 deadline.  I will be awarding Club ribbons and individual buttons at our TLIs.  My vision is to present these prestigious awards to 20 clubs with applause and cheers the likes of which have never before been heard in District 22.

I've ordered lots of ribbons.  Make it your club goal to earn the first ever D-22 Goal Getter Award by earning 5 Distinguished Club Program points or more by December 31.

For more information on the Goal Getter Award, see our District web-site at www.toastmasters22.org .

Newly Chartered
Welcome, MoKan Toasters

By Annette Rude, DTM, Lieutenant. Governor Marketing

"It's official!" Patti Simons reported to members of the new MoKan Toasters Club # 1095699.  "I received our letter from Toastmasters International, dated Oct. 31, 2007 in congratulations upon completion of charter requirements.  What a milestone!"  As sponsor and newly elected club president, Patti's vision to form a Toastmaster club at her Sprint location had finally materialized.

"Yeah!  And Network Masters received a Founders Award today for sponsoring MoKan Toasters!" replied Kellie Hewitt, a member of Network Masters who was invited to help sponsor the new club.

MoKan Toastmasters is an open club that meets weekly at Sprint in the historic stockyard or West Bottoms of downtown Kansas City in Area L6.  Club mentors are Patti Simons and David Whitner, who is also a member of Hear Me Out Toastmasters.

Club sponsors began organizing in July, held their demonstration meeting in September and chartered with 20 members in October.  Congratulations on a job well done!

And a hearty "Welcome" to the members of MoKan Toasters!

Are We Distinguished?Circle

by Mike Tuttle, District 22 Governor

Just like clubs, Districts are given goals each year and then evaluated against them to determine if that District is distinguished, and whether at Distinguished, Select Distinguished or President's Distinguished level.

One of the toughest requirements for districts to become distinguished is membership, and rightly so!  Without our members we are nothing.

In my mind the biggest challenge of memberships is retention. Keeping the members we have is a huge job and the responsibility of every toastmaster in District 22.

While I firmly believe the validity of the previous statement that it's everyone's responsibility to keep existing members, I strongly feel that it is the special purview of the VP Membership of each club. Retaining existing members is just as important and often a greater challenge (and thus a greater reward) than finding ways to attract new members.

Right now, our numbers are below where they were at the end of June. Soooo, if any of you know a member that has not yet sent in the October renewal call them and remind them that it is not too late.  After you remind them that it's not too late, please encourage them to take the time and renew that day and certainly not later than the next day. Many times, members simple have overlooked renewing or think that since no one asked them to, their contribution is not valued - what a shame.

Now I'd like to speak to the VP's Membership for just a moment. I'd like to ask you to think back to officer training and recall that I visited virtually every one of your training sessions and gave you a mantra to put to use regarding existing members.

Do you recall, "miss 2 VPM try anew"? It means that if you have a member that has missed 2 meetings in a row I would be most appreciative if you would give them a call and treat them just like a brand new member and encourage and invite them to the very next meeting. Since it's holiday time, the possibility for a special meeting and perhaps great food and certainly strong fellowship exist for them.

I'm confident that if each of us makes just that small effort to call a missing member and invite them to renew their membership that when the numbers come out in December, Annette Rude Lt. Governor Marketing (which includes membership) can inform me that we have increased our numbers since the end of June and are on track to set a record for the District and make us DISTINGUISHED!!!

Club Promotion Idea
"If You Bring Them... They Will Come..."
by Paul D. McDonald, ACG, ALB
Public Relations Officer

Here's one idea that a club is working on for promoting membership and excitement for their club. The Yes We Can Toast club in Overland Park will be hosting a "Tastemasters" meeting on Tuesday, November 27 at 12:00.

What is a "Tastemasters" meeting?  The club presentations for the day will be centered around preparation of food, which will include live cooking demos and free samples.  The word of the day will be "food-oriented" and table-topics will have a "food-related" theme.

But what makes this event special is not the food, or the demonstrations, or anything about the meeting.  What makes it special is the promotional materials that are being forwarded to guests and potential Toastmasters.  Each club member is asked to personally invite at least one co-worker to the club meeting.  Then, when it is time to go to the meeting, they will be asked to go to the person they invited and bring them to the meeting.

This process is not "invite and hope they show up" ... not "ask and see if they come" ... not "send an e-mail and hide" ... but actually go get them.  Bring them to the meeting.  Help them find the location.

We will follow up this column in next month's issue with the results.
Host That Toast! Toast
by Mike Tuttle
District 22 Governor

How many of you know who your Division Governor is? The answer to this questions will be a resounding "YES" when your club is the first in its division to get four more new members!

Your club can still participate in the Host a Toast contest. The time for the Smedley Award has passed as has the first level of the contest. But it's not too late - when your club is the first in its' Division to grow by 4 new members thus receiving one DCP point and then grows by 4 more new members and qualifies for and additional DCP point a wonderful thing happens.

Since you will have fulfilled all the membership DCP points, your very own Division Governor will visit your club and give a toast speech about your club from the Special Occasions Advanced Manual. So far Division A in Wichita has had their first club - the Money Talks club qualifies for their Division Governor visit. Also, Division L in the greater KC area has had their first club qualify, was it your club if you're in Division L? Check with your Division Governor to find out!

So Divisions T K and S can still have the first club qualify for the Division Governor visit and for A and L the next level is to have the Lt. Governor Marketing (LGM), Annette Rude a DTM visit. Check out the District web site at Toastmasters22.org to learn all the details as to how.

Holiday Meeting Idea

Plaza Toastmasters has a holiday tradition where members turn table topics into a gift exchange.  Club members bring food and those who want to participate bring a white elephant gift -- usually a "re-gift."  Instead of a question during table topics, members pick a gift and then open it--and then extoll the wonders of the gift!

This can be great practice for the holidays!  You never know when you will need to be excited about a gift (like those bunny-feet pajamas your "Aunt Gertrude" made for you)!
