September 2007 Edition
powerpacked

By Cyndra Melville, DTM
Lieutenant Governor Education and Training

What:         District 22 Fall Conference

Where:       Broadview Hotel, 400 W. Douglass, Wichita, KS

When:        October 26 - 27, 2007

Power Packed Pow-Wow is the theme for the upcoming fall conference.  This was chosen because of the rich heritage of the Wichita area where tribes met long before the Europeans came.  It was also a main trade center.

We have an exciting event planned for you.  Our educational sessions include:

  • Michael Smith, DTM, International Director presenting "Shaping Ourselves; Shaping Our World".  He will be focusing on both Toastmasters and business applications.
  • Linda Shinogle, DTM will be presenting a workshop: "Beating the Drum".  Her presentation will include audience participation and will help us with diction, rhythm, and pronunciation.
  • Kim Myers, ACG, Marilyn Schwartz, CC, ALS, and Cheri Staniford, ACS will be presenting: "Spread the Toastmaster's Experience"; a how to approach for building new clubs.

Dress up in a fun costume for Friday Fun Night.  Get ready for Halloween.  Listen to the District's best Evaluators and Humorous Speakers at the Contests.   All of this PLUS seeing friends, networking and having a great time.

Go to our web site at www.toastmasters22.org and select "Conference Info" for your registration form.

First Smedley Award WinnersSmedley

By Annette Rude, DTM Lieutenant. Governor Marketing

Congratulations to winners of July and August Smedley Award and to Host-a-Toast winners.

There is still time for more Smedley winners and opportunities for your Area Governor to Toast your club. Toastmasters International's Smedley membership contest runs through September.  Find out more about it online at: www.toastmasters.org/1620.aspx  Find out more about District 22's Host-a-Toast contest at www.toastmasters22.org or contact your Area Governor.

Money Talks Club in Wichita signed up 7 new members, growing it to 20 members.  It is  the first club in Area A1 to add 5 members and win the Smedley Award, also making it a Host-a-Toast winner.  See the article by their Area Governor Steve Gridley about his visit to toast the club's achievement.

Top Box Toasters is a Host-a-Toast winner for Area L6 Governor Jeff Sullivan.  Six new members joined bringing the club's total members to an incredible 33.

Cerner Innovative Toastmasters is a Host-a-Toast winner for Area L4 Governor Marilyn Schwartz.  Its five new members grew the club past charter strength to 24 members.  Marilyn says that the club's VP of Membership, Faviola Hart, and her membership committee follow up with new and returning guests and sent them a weekly invitation to the meeting.  Fabiola personally greets guests at club meetings, making them feel welcome and giving them a membership application.  These were tips that she picked up at Club Officers Training this summer.

Beechmasters Club is a second Smedley winner for Area A1 Governor Steve Gridley.  The club's success is a testament to the hard work of club members, such as Teresa Wallace, who led the way for the clubs revival by recruiting management support and implementing a successful company wide promotion and demonstration meeting.

Successful Host
Mike Tuttle, ATM-B, CL
District 22 Governor

As we learned in Annette's article above, a number of clubs have won the Smedley award. By doing so, the first club that qualified in each area is eligible for a special visit from their Area Governor who will toast that club.

But don't give up trying! There are still more chances for a District officer to visit your club and give a toast. The next phase comes from the DCP points. The first club in each Division to get four new members AND four more new members, thus getting 2 DCP points will qualify for a visit from the Division Governor to toast their club.

Yes, clubs that won the Smedley can count those five (or more members) toward the eight total for the next phase. Details for the entire contest are on the District web site at toastmasters22.org. Your Division Governors are standing by to visit your club and give a toast for your successful efforts.

Who will be the very first? The first in each Division? The excitement is growing and I can't wait to see who will be next!  Invite your friends and family to visit your club and then ask them to join!

My Icebreaker
By Patti Baumgartner
Deputy Public Relations Officer

I am quite familiar with speaking in front of an audience.  I earn most of my living by traveling all over the United States teaching at seminars for Health Care Professionals. I have lectured to as many as 200 technologists at a time!  Public speaking is not a terrifying experience for me.

That is... until I joined Toastmasters!  As my "Ice-Breaker speech approached, I suddenly realized I had no idea how to deliver any kind of speech that was not technically oriented. It was samples and handouts that were important, presentation skills were secondary, maybe not even necessary.

In Toastmasters I had to watch my "Ahs" and "You knows".  My fellow Toastmasters were going to evaluate me on my vocal variety and speed of speaking.  I can no longer just hide behind the podium in a darkened room and point at slides.  I have to stand up in front of my audience and FACE THEM!  I was terrified.

I thought about dropping out.  After all it was only a few dollars invested in dues. I had only attended four or five meetings--maybe I wouldn't be missed.    I felt sure that I could find something else to do for an hour on Tuesdays.  But, alas pride made me "go for it".  So with fear and trepidation in my heart, and a full complement of butterflies in my stomach, I did my "Ice-Breaker" speech.

When it was over... no one threw anything at me.. or booed... I didn't faint.  I didn't forget too many points.  I had survived the ordeal!

After I sat down, my heart started to beat again and I could breath.

Then came the evaluations.  My heart pounded and my hands started to shake. I need not have worried.  My club members were kind and fair in their evaluations. They pointed out good points and offered ways to improve.

I have reached speech number 7 in the Competent Communicator book, and have done several "table topic" speeches. Once, I even entered a speech contest!  I still get butterflies, but now they fly in formation.

Congratulations!Trumpets

Congratulations to Dennis Beebe and Larna Anderson Beebe.  They successfully completed their Club Coach assignment with Tiffany Springs in area L1.  Tiffany Springs finished the 2006-2007 Toastmaster year as Select Distinguished with 8 DCP points and 21 members.  Way to go!!!

District 22 had NINE DTMs during the 2006-2007 year.  This is a District record!

  1. Jozef Zelenak  KU Engineering  Toastmasters Club,  Lawrence
  2. Michael Jamison  Heartland Club, Topeka
  3. Linda M. Shinogle  Boeing Achievers Club,  Wichita
  4. Gene Becker  Haworth-Wichita Club, Wichita
  5. R. W. Thompson  Fountain Head Toastmasters Club, Kansas City
  6. Larry M. Wilson  Don't Stop Talking at DST Club,  Kansas City
  7. David W. Boyce Agmasters Club, Kansas City
  8. Annette M. Rude  Plaza Toastmasters Club,  Kansas City
  9. Judy A. Rose Tri-Lakes Club,  Branson

A DTM award not only represents an awesome personal achievement--it also represents service to the District!  Thank you one and all!

Toasting an Old FriendToast
By Steve Gridley, Area A1 Governor

Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to "Host a Toast" to Money Talks and celebrate their success story. They are the first Smedley Award winner in District 22 for theToastmaster year!  It was one of the most fun and rewarding experiences of my Toastmaster career.  I am very proud of Money Talks. Their president Penny Garding and club officers have really turned things around.

Last spring, I found out that Money Talks had not renewed their club dues. I was told that "it was too late, the decision had already been made and the club would be closing its doors". I thought how sad it must be to lose your speaking support group. It would be much like losing an old friend.

This summer, I found out that I was about to became Area A1 Governor. With encouragement and assistance from seasoned members of my own club, I contacted Money Talks and we planned a visit. We met a small nucleus of leaders who wanted to get the club up and going again. They had only two or three members with Toastmasters experience, but they had an abundance of enthusiasm and a genuine concern for their members' personal goals. In that first meeting, they had seven visitors!  Together, we worked on a plan to save their club.

With strong club leadership, they have brought their old friend back from the edge of demise. Their membership has blossomed with eight new members since July 1, which achieves two DCP membership goals. Money Talks Toastmasters is well on its way to being Distinguished at charter strength!

Newly Chartered:  Speaking Eagles
 Eagle Hatchling
By Gerald Bremer, Immediate Past Area S3 Governor.

In August, the Speaking Eagles Club chartered in Springfield, Mo. It is a club for team members at the home office of ANPAC® (American National Property And Casualty Company).

The credit for this successful start-up goes to Shand Glenn and a dynamic group of new club officers.  In the fall of 2006, Shand was a member in the Springfield Toastmasters, the only club in town. He was considering running for club president when he got the idea of starting a club where he worked.

Members of Springfield Toastmasters helped Shand with a demo meeting and the club startup received the backing of the HR Division. Interest started to build. Prospective members visited Springfield Club meetings to see how it all worked. Shand told me several times that it was people within the group at ANPAC® that kept momentum going.

I was fortunate to be S3 Area Governor while this was all happening. Being an AG is a great experience, but being able to support a club start-up was especially rewarding. This group didn't need much help though. All I did as AG was get them a club start-up kit, answer questions and put them in contact with people like Al Voorhees, Past District 22 Governor. Most of the information they needed was on District 22's website in the Tips/Tools section under "Building New Clubs."

It is fun now to visit Speaking Eagles and their club President, Shand Glenn.

Shining Star Star

This is the first installment of a monthly feature that will highlight a District 22 Toastmaster, who has benefited in everyday life from being a Toastmaster.  It may be something as simple as enjoying coworkers more by listening more effectively to them, or something as special as having a life changing event.

The very first Shining Star is - drum roll please.  The Area A1 Governor, Steve Gridley.

Steve and District Governor Mike Tuttle were having a conversation Thursday night September 13th when Steve mentioned that he had interviewed for a management position at his job recently and had accepted the offer Wednesday. Steve was quick to give credit to Toastmasters for giving him the speaking abilities to make him successful in his interview. Congratulations Steve!!!!

Mike would like to make this a monthly feature.  To nominate (self nominations are allowed) a Toastmaster, simply inform your Area Governor and they will pass it along to the District trio for review and selection of each months winner. Nomination deadline is the 5th of each month for inclusion in that month's Gavel. The District trio can't wait to see October's nominees, so talk with your fellow Toastmasters and learn how it has helped them in their everyday lives and then nominate them to be a Shining Star.
